Surfing challenge takes off at Bagasbas beach in Daet

-

MANILA, Philippines - Surfing takes center stage beginning today as the Ultimate National Surfing Challenge 2010 fires off at Bagasbas beach in Daet, Camarines Norte.

Backed by the Department of Tourism-Region V, the event features a men’s skim boarding open competition, beach tattooing contests, dance showdown and surfing clinics with a reggae victory party to cap the three-day event on Sunday.

The event, which is also tipped to boost local tourism, gathers the best Filipino and Philippine-based surfers, underscoring the resurgence of the sport, according to Gov. Edgar Tallado.

He added that Bagasbas is endowed by kilometers of fine sand beaches, the most number of beach breaks, reefs, and river mouth breaks making it an ideal surfing haven even for beginners.

Situated on the country’s Pacific seaboard, Bagasbas hosted the first All Filipino Surfing Event in 1979, and has since put the beach in the surfing circuit map in the country and the world.

Aside from surfing, Bagasbas is also home to the Daet International Kiteboarding Competition, the Bagasbas International Eco-Arts Festival, and various multi-sports special events.

It is also set to host a kayaking marathon of the Philippine Kayaking Association in February next year.

Camarines Norte also boasts of other surfing sites and island groups with coral reef formations and white sand beaches.
