Chessers eye top 30

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines winds up its Chess Olympiad campaign against Estonia, hoping to pull off a win and improve its 37th-place in Dresden two years ago.

Grandmaster Wesley So clashes with GM Kaido Kulaots on the top board while GM John Paul Gomez faces GM Meelis Kanep, GM Darwin Laylo battles IM Olav Sepp and IM Richard Bitoon meets IM Aleksandr Volodin in the other matches.

GM Eugene Torre took a final round rest. The 58-year-old Filipino icon finished with 4.5 points on three wins, three draws and one loss. With 12 points, the Filipinos are tied for 31st with a victory over the Estonians assuring them a top 30 finish.
