Floyd Jr sought for alleged attack on ex-girlfriend

- Abac Cordero -

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao is so busy fighting environmental destruction and poverty while gearing up for his next fight, and at the same time Floyd Mayweather Jr. is being sought by police because of domestic violence.

The Los Angeles Times yesterday reported that Mayweather’s former girlfriend, Jose Harris, summoned the police to a home in Las Vegas at around five in the morning, and alleged that Mayweather had attacked her.

Based on the LA Times report, multiple police cars arrived at the scene, as well as domestic violence investigators, to talk to Harris, who police said has children with the 33-year-old former pound-for-pound champion.

Police spokesman Bill Cassell was quoted as saying that Harris was taken to a hospital for “minor injuries” but was later released.

Last week, Mayweather was all over the boxing websites after unleashing a verbal assault on Pacquiao. Some found his nasty remarks as racist, and later on he apologized, saying he was “only having fun.”

Certainly, Mayweather is not going to have fun with this latest incident.

“At this point, Mr. Mayweather is a suspect in a domestic battery violence case, and we would very much like to speak with him,” Cassell told Lance Pugmire of the LA Times.

No one from within Mayweather’s team has issued a statement on behalf of the boxer who may be looking for a new opponent after negotiations for a superfight with Pacquiao fell off a second time.

Mayweather defeated Shane Mosley last May 1, and seemed all set to land a fight with Pacquiao, but his allegations of the Filipino fighter’s use of performance-enhancing drugs led to the complete breakdown in the negotiations.

Michael Marley, however, wrote that the police are “rightly skeptical” about Harris’ allegation, adding that seven years ago the same woman accused Mayweather of attacking while inside a Bentley in Las Vegas.

Marley continued that the charges were dropped in 2005 when Harris admitted lying to the police, and that it was jealousy that led her to making such allegations.
