MANILA, Philippines - San Beda’s Garvo Lanete came back strong from a two-week layoff with an imposing performance in a 77-60 win over archrival Letran to emerge the NCAA Press Corps’ Accel/Fil-Oil Player of Week in Season 86 of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament last Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Lanete exploded for 22 points and made five rebounds, two assists and two steals to lift the Lions to their fourth straight victory and a share of the lead with the defending champion San Sebastian Stags.
What made Lanete’s effort doubly impressive was that he dished it out despite coming off a long layoff.
“He has put a lot of work in our every practice and you can see that in his game,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim, referring to his sweet-shooting guard.
Lanete bested Arellano U’s Rocky Acidre, Jose Rizal’s Raycon Kabigting and San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva for the weekly honor sponsored by Accel/Fil-Oil and backed by Terrilicious meat products.
Lanete was awesome in the fourth quarter when he uncorked an eight-point binged that fueled a 14-0 run that virtually took the fight out the Muralla-based cagers.
“He’s not just a deadly shooter but he can also hit the big shots as seen in our last game,” said Lim.
