Angping Cup chess slated
MANILA, Philippines - No less than Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping will be the guest of honor when the second Angping Cup age-group rapid chess championships is staged Thursday at the PSC Canteen inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Vito Cruz, Manila.
Angping, a staunch supporter of chess, will deliver the inspirational remarks during the 2 p.m. opening ceremony in the one-day, seven-round event held as part of the Araw ng Maynila celebrations.
Angping will also make the ceremonial moves along with National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president/chairman Butch Pichay.
Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim is also invited to grace the opening ceremony.
Like Angping, Mayor Lim is another patron of chess, having hosted several tournaments in the city.
At stake in the tournament divided into three age categories are trophies and cash prizes put up by Angping, including under-20, under-16 and under-12 divisions.
The champion in each category will bring home the top prize of P20,000 and trophy. The runner-up and the third placer will pocket P10,000 and P8,000, respectively.
Other cash prizes at stake are P6,000 (fourth placer), P5,000 (fifth), P4,000 (sixth), P3,000 (seventh), P2,000 (eighth), P1,500 (ninth), P1,000 (10th) and P500 (11th up to 20 th).
Games will start at exactly 10 a.m.
NCFP executive/events director Willie Abalos said time control is 20 minutes with three seconds increment.
Abalos is requesting all interested participants to register early.
Deadline for listup is on June 23 at the NCFP headquarters located at the Philsports in Pasig City.
