Long-time partners rule World Slasher
MANILA, Philippines - Art de Castro and Eddie Aparri’s entry, Art Ed as Thunderbee, bested the 10 leading entries in the finals to capture the solo championship in the World Slasher Cup-2 Hawaiian 8-cock Invitational Derby at the Araneta Coliseum over the weekend.
Aparri and de Castro’s entries fought a formidable fleet of 4-5 year-old fighters composed of locally bred crosses and a number of imported pure broodcocks and proved it’s better in the end.
“It’s gratifying,” said Aparri after sealing the championship and winning his first World Slasher Cup with his long-time partner.
In the championship, the winning pair fielded in full brothers of 3/4 Leiper Hatch-1/4 Cowan Roundhead for their fifth and sixth fights and two five-years-old White-Legged Roundhead-Clarets brothers in the seventh and eighth matches.
The duo leaned on two pure Sheryll Penny Hatches in the elims and relied on the Johnny Jumper Greys in the semifinals of the tournament hosted by Pintakasi of Champions and co-presented by Thunderbird SabongNation.
“We fought dark-legged fowls in the elims and semis, but in the finals, light-legged fowls were our choice,” said de Castro. “We’re about to lose four entries but we still managed to win.”
