Mata tops jungolf final leg

-

MANILA, Philippines - Gus Mata rallied with a three-under par 69 to turn back a bunch of Korean teeners and capture the boys Class A crown in the eighth and final leg of the ICTSI Jungolf Summer Circuit at the Ayala Greenfields Estates Golf and Leisure Club in Calamba, Laguna.

Mata battled back from five shots down after rounds of 72 and 77 as he sparkled with that closing 69 for a 220 aggregate and a two-shot win over Yoon Sung-hwan, who wavered with a 74 after two 73s.

Three other Koreans made it to the Top 5 in other divisions.

Miggy Yee, meanwhile, fired a tournament-best 67 to cop the Class B crown and extend his winning record over AR Ramos.

Ramos carded 70, 73 and 73, spiked by an ace on No. 3. But he just couldn’t match the Yee’s torrid pace and lost by five.

Gabriel Manotoc held off a charging Kenneth Won to win boys Class C by one, Kristoffer Arevalo routed the field in Class D and Alexander Lietz topped the special division circuit also supported by Philippine Airlines, Pancake House Group, Teriyaki Boy and Sizzilin Pepper as major sponsors. The other sponsors are Dynamic Sports and Leisure Corp., McDonald’s, Smart, Golf Depot and Pioneer Insurance.

Over at the Riviera executive course where the Class E and Class F divisions were played, Carl Corpus and Jed Dy both won in runaway fashions.

Sisters Princess and Ace Superal were among the girls division winners who included Marvi Monsalve, Mia Legaspi and Bernice Olivarez-Ilas.

Princess, recent winner of an Asia-Pacific crown, topped Class B by 31 while Ace took the Class F trophy by four. Monsalve prevailed by three shots, Legaspi was unchallenged and Ilas finished six strokes up.
