MANILA, Philippines - Lefty Leo Barredo and veteran Corazon Sobere pulled off outstanding feats to emerge as the Most Valuable Players in the recent 2010 Cebuana-Lhuillier National Open Softball Championships held in Baguio City.
Barredo of men’s champion Rizal Technological University and Sobere of women’s winner University of Santo Tomas spearheaded the Blue Thunders and the Growling Tigresses title bids in the series held May 1-7.
Barredo, a physical education sophomore at RTU, showed why he was adjudged the 10th best hurler in last year’s World Men’s Softball Championship held in Saskatoon in Canada by starting in all of the Thunders’ seven games and leading coach Noel Bumagat’s chargers to an unbeaten slate.
Sobere, a first class enlisted woman in the Air Force, lost only once as she led the Tigresses’ 6-1 win-loss card. She dished out a 15-inning doubleheader performance in a single day against eventual runner up RTU Lady Thunders and Adamson.
Oscar Bradshaw of RTU was named the best hitter, submitting a high .550 average, while fellow Blu Boy Mark Ray Ramirez of MS-Marikina took the Home Run King and best slugger honors.
