Arnis youth tourneys set

-

MANILA, Philippines - The First Arnis Bulilit and Batang Arnis invitational tournaments for players 7-11 and 12-17 years old, respectively, have been scheduled May 21-23 at the Robinson’s Mall-Otis.

Ray Velayo, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee-recognized Arnis Philippines, Inc., said that the three-day events are the first of a series of programs his association is holding this summer pursuant to Republic Act 9850, which declared arnis as the national martial art.

“The twin tournaments are primarily the start of what we envisioned to develop the athletic abilities, discipline, moral character and physical fitness of our youth through the sport of arnis,” Velayo said.

The Arnis Bulilit, according to Velayo, consists of form or kata as in karatedo, which is a beginners’ course to teach those who are still starting to practice the sport the different stance, technique and style of fighting without physical contact.

“Batang Arnis, on the other hand, consists of real combat and is open to participants who are in the 12-17 age bracket,” Velayo said.

“It is similar to the Palarong Pambansa in the secondary division. The only difference is that the event is open to out-of-school youth.”

Meanwhile, a seminar for commissioners, coordinators and accredited referees and judges will be held May 19-20 at the Arnis head office at 11th Street in New Manila, Quezon City.
