Berino rules Belmonte Cup swim meet

MANILA, Philippines - Palarong Pambansa standout Gian Berino and Inaki Lorbes of the Susan Papa Swimming Academy bagged four gold medals each to emerge most outstanding swimmers in their divisions in the Mayor Sonny Belmonte Cup age group swimming meet recently at the Amoranto swimming pool on Roces Ave., Quezon City.

Berino, who won two gold medals in the recent Palarong Pambansa, took the gold medals in the 100m freestyle and butterfly and 100m and 200m backstroke events of the competition which drew over 300 swimmers from Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

Berino is mentored by Joey Andaya, national coach of the Philippine Swimming League, which organized the event sponsored by Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte, who was represented by swimming patron Nikki Coseteng.

Lorbes won in the 50m backstroke and breaststroke and the 100m freestyle and butterfly for 7-8 year-olds.

Other outstanding girl swimmers were Eyasha Camus of the Grotto Vista Swim Team (6-under), Nirel Marie Ybarra, Blue Whales (7-8), Paula Cayanan, Rem Ortega Aqua School (9-10), Priscilla Aquino, Joey Andaya Swim Team (11-12), Myka Chua, Emer Matienzo Bosay Swim Team (13-14) and Rory Tapang, Edgar Galleno Patio Isabel Golden Sharks (15-17).

The boys division outstanding swimmers were Mark Joseph Capa, 6-U (Grotto Vista), Sean Terrence Zamora, Cavite Elite Swim Club (9-10), Jose Antonio Junsay, Lipa Mediatrix Swim Club (11-12) and Luis Alfonso Arreola, Red Manta Rays (13-14).
