Canja, Cansino rule Smart-Head tennis
MANILA, Philippines - Jzash Canja and Davis Cupper Juan Paolo Cansino posted twin victories in their respective divisions to rule the third leg of the Smart-Head Junior Tennis Tour Satellite Circuit at the Digos City Tennis Club in Digos City recently.
Canja, from Kidapawan City, stamped her class in the 14-under and 16-under girls’ division while Cansino carved out close wins in the 16-under and 18-under boys’ category.
Canja whipped Chelsea Gacho of Isabela, Basilan twice, posting a 6-2, 6-3 triumph in the 14-under and repeating with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the 16-under class in the ranking tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association.
Canja and Jaffary Cariga were named top players of the leg of the tournament presented by Smart Communications in cooperation with Head, Chris Sports, Toalson and Meralco. Both received brand-new cellphone units and tennis equipment.
Cariga, from Davao City, routed Jericho Painagan, 6-3, 6-2, in the 12-under boys’ final.
Painagan, however, struck back and blanked Janus Ringia, 6-0, 6-0, to capture the 10-unisex crown.
Cansino, meanwhile, repulsed local bet Alfredo Delvo, 7-5, 6-3, to cop the 16-under title then survived at three-set thriller over fellow Atenean Andre Banate, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-7), for the 18-under diadem.
Other winners were Dana Abad of Davao City (12-under), Miko Alpas of Digos City (14-under) and Eloisa Collo, also of Digos City, (18-under).
