Japan overwhelms Hong Kong in Asian fencing

-

MANILA, Philippines - Powerhouse Japan overpowered Hong Kong, 45-35, in the boys’ team foil event to capture its third gold medal in the Asian Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Individual cadet foil gold medal winner Riki Oishi led the Japanese romp along with Teppei Azuma, Makoto Ito and Shuhei Miyosi as they walloped Hong Kong’s Choi Nicholas Edwards, Chan Howie Ho Yun, Sham Kent Ki Kai and Wong Chak Lam.

It was the Japanese’ third gold in the 10-day meet organized by the Fencing Confederation of Asia headed by Celso Dayrit and the Philippine Fencing Association and backed by Philippine Sports Commission chair Harry Angping.

Oishi took the individual cadet foil gold medal in Monday’s opener while Yuki Yasuda reigned supreme in the individual cadet boys’ saber two days ago.

Behind Choi, the Hong Kong fencers forced a 5-all count but the Japanese stamped their class the rest of the way en route to the victory.

The event, which drew the participation of the best fencers in the 20-and-under age bracket in the region as well as in Oceania, stakes 96 medals in 24 events. – Joey Villar
