Badminton demo sport in NCAA

-

MANILA, Philippines - Badminton finally made its debut in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) after it was launched as a demo sports in the 85th Season held recently at the Badminton Hall of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC).

Despite insufficient funds, the event, which took years to materialize, was held successfully through the efforts of College of St. Benilde’s Henry Atayde, member of the NCAA Management Committee (MANCOM).

The event was organized by Dr. Ramon Guerrero, with the support of the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) under the leadership of former First Lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the LSGH ‘75 Foundation.

“With the success of this year’s competition, we believe it won’t be long before we achieve that again in the years to come,” said Dr. Guerrero, who also acknowledged other sponsors including Prince (official badminton racket of the 85th NCAA), i-Pure, Potato Corner, Beach Hut, Badminton Extreme, Clusivol and Gerry’s Grill.

The three-day event was a huge success as nine schools participated to compete for the very first title. The participating schools were St. Benilde, Letran, San Beda College, Arellano University, Angeles University Foundation, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Mapua, Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College.

Newcomer Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) won the senior’s division title against St. Benilde in the finals, while CSB-La Salle Green Hills and the CSB Lady Blazers won the junior’s and women’s championships, respectively.
