Jover propels FEU booters edge UE side

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University nipped University of the East, 1-0, at the start of the second round of the 72nd UAAP football competitions at the Erenchun Field inside the Ateneo campus over the weekend.

After both teams went scoreless in the early going, striker Romnick Jover blasted a goal in the 70th minute as FEU improved to second with a 4-1-1 win-loss-draw worth 13 points.

University of Santo Tomas, which leads the field with a 4-0-2 record for 14 points, forced a scoreless draw with De La Salle University in the first game of the event supported by Mizuno and Ateneo De Manila University.

La Salle and UE were both in the bottom of the standings with 1-4-1 card for four points and 1-5-0 record for three points, respectively.

Host Ateneo (2-3-1 win-loss-draw for 7 points) took a 1-1 draw with defending champion University of the Philippines (3-2-1 log for 10 points) in the last men’s game.

Keith Mordeno of UP hit the first goal at 55th minute but Gregorio Cancio of Ateneo drilled in a game-tying goal with 90th minute to force the draw.

In the women’s side at the Ocampo field, De La Salle’s Adrianne Yniguez scored at the 20th minute mark and the Lady Archers hang on to a 1-0 win over rival Ateneo side in the first game.   

Marianne Narciso hit three goals – 41st, 58th and 76th – to lift reigning women’s champion UST to a convincing 3-0 win against luckless UP and improved to 3-1-1 win-loss log for 10 points, which keep them at third.

La Salle stays at second place with 3-0-2 win-loss-draw for 11 points, while Ateneo remains at the cellar with 0-4-1 card. UP has 1-4-0 record.

In the juniors’ side, host Ateneo blanked UST, 7-0, and FEU routed La Salle-Zobel, 6-0, to remain tied on top with 3-0-1 standings for 10 points each. UST stays winless in four games while La Salle-Zobel has 1-3-0.
