UE annual intramurals kick off tomorrow

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the East’s 2009-2010 Intramurals with the theme “Unity and Goodwill through Sports,” opens tomorrow, at 9 a.m., at the UE Caloocan Gym.

The games aim to give UE students an opportunity to show off their athletic prowess in basketball and volleyball in a month-long competition.

The UE High School-Manila, defending champion for men’s basketball, the College of Education (women), and volleyball defending champion UE High School-Manila (both men and women) are the teams to beat, but out to dislodge them are the UE Manila Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Computer Studies and Systems, Dentistry, Law and Graduate School, the UE Caloocan Colleges of Fine Arts, Arts and Sciences and Business Administration and the UE High School-Caloocan.

UE president Ester Garcia will give an inspirational message. UE executive vice pesident Carmelita Mateo will formally declare the opening of the 2009-10 university-wide sportsfest. Caloocan chancellor Fedeserio Camarao will deliver the welcome remarks while PE department secretary Angelina Yusay will lead the invocation.

Garcia will do the ceremonial volleyball serve, to be assisted by Mateo, Camarao and UE PE department assistant director Rodrigo Roque.

Highlights of the ceremonies are the parade of teams and muses, cheerdance demonstration by the UE Pep Squad and a musical rendtiion by the UE Band under the baton of Danny Quianzon.

Cheer-dance competition is now part of the UE intramurals, to be presented during the cross-over pairings and the semifinal games in basketball.

The UE intrams are a venue to discover potential athletes and are part of the UE students’ wellness program, implemented in coordination with the UE PE Dept., headed by Roque and his staff – Angelina Yusay (department secretary), Fernando Olona (sports coordinator), Roberto Pineda (athletic assistant), Jay Veron, Aldha Bruno and Melvin Reyes.

Teresita “Tisha” Abundo, a UE alumna-achiever and former PSC commissioner, is consultant.

The intrams’ technical committee is composed of PE faculty members Leo Robert Viajar, Fernando Danganan, Jesus Anselmo Reyes, Vladymir Aquino, Ma. Carmina Gonzales, Antonio Valenzuela, Jessie Abrencillo, Crisanto Barizo, Arthur Fronda, Ma. Arceli Enterina, Dave David, Paulita Idian, Joycelin Sta. Ana, Ana Marie Gelito, Olivia Mariano, Leonora Celso, Elenita Viajar, Rogelio Ponte, Lovely Yee, Gil Co, May Aquino Ruel Pascual, Marecil Maquilan, May Rose San Luis, Amelia Francisco, Rolando Canlas and PE-major students.
