Southwoods completes 58-point Fil-Am romp

BAGUIO , Philippines  – Manila Southwoods annexed its eighth championship in the Fil-Am golf tournament, completing its domination with a closing 141-point output for a runaway 58-point victory over Mizuno at the Camp John Hay Golf Club here yesterday.

Vince Lauron and Chepe Dulay, 17, matched par with 36 points to lead the final day charge of the Carmona-based squad, which posted a 13-point lead in the first day, padded it to 19 before virtually clinching the crown with a 34-point bulge right in the third round.

Miggy Yee, 13, turned in 35 points or a one-over 70 in stroke play while Jun Jun Plana carded 34 points as Southwoods wound up with a 513 aggregate in an awesome show of firepower.

Plana capped Southwoods’ romp by bagging his second overall low medal individual honors with 134.

Wolen Superal, 16, didn’t count with a 25.

Mizuno assembled 117 points on the 34 of Justin Limjap, as it ended up with a 455. John Baron Garcia and Rodel Mangulabnan had 28 points while King Stehmeier added 27.

Camp Aguinaldo settled for third place with a 448 after a 123.

Over at the Baguio Country Club, Team JF took the Am Championship with a closing 84 and a nine-point victory over Philippine Navy GC.

Richard Joson topscored for Team JF with 26 points, while Christian delos Santos had 20 points Belem Arancon and Masakazu Saso each scored 19 points for the team’s 430 total.

Philippine Navy GC submitted a fourth round of 89 for 421 points while Matikas made a 94 for 399 points for third.

In Fil A, Che’lus I coasted to victory as it finished with 128 points for a 484 and a 59-point victory over local team Baguio Country Club which had 111 for 425. Ultra Flite closed out with a 110 for a 416 for third.

Meanwhile, Dugong Bughaw completed its back-to-back title romp in the Fil-B flight, duplicating its wire-to-wire victory last year.

The members of the squad were Obet Samson, Mike Morada, Noel Marcellano, Willy Princesa and Gerry Florendo.

Benlife MAA I finished second while Mamala Bay settled for third.

In Fil C, New Jersey-New York BIBAK had 95 for 384 as it romped away with a 23-point victory over Davao Eglamasters I. First round leader Baguio Ventures II had 95 and wound up third with a 358.

Che’lus 2 closed with a 93 for a 357 aggregate and to capture the Fil D title by 13 points. Fairgolf of Sydney had 86 for 344.

In Am A, Camp Aguinaldo made an 82 for a 395 as it nipped Che’lus, which had a 394 after an 86, by a point.

Baguio Country Club had 84 for 376 for third.

In Am B, Baguio Centennial had 326 after a 59 as it posted a 10-point victory over Capitol Hills, which had a 76 for 316. Dugong Bughaw finished third with a 67 and a 305. - Artemio Dumlao
