'Quest' pays tribute to Nazario

MANILA, Philippines - The coming “Quest For Glory” ring card, featuring a double championship duel, serves as a tribute to the late boxing manager and promoter Rod Nazario.

The special Christmas boxing show will be aired over Rod Nazario’s In This Corner during its weekly episode every Sunday, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. over NBN-4.

Along with veteran boxing personalities Moy Lainez and Lito Mondejar, Nazario was in the forefront of discovering and developing rising Filipino pro boxers through such popular programs as Blow By Blow and the nine-year program In This Corner.

Nazario, who passed away last September at the age of 74 due to lung cancer, was also credited for giving boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao his first big break in the US.

One of his protégés in Eden Sonsona is actually seeing action in the main card of the Dec. 12 event presented by San Miguel Beer-Samahang Walang Katulad, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), GSIS, Petron and Biogenic Isopropyl Alcohol.

Sonsona will be vying for the RP bantamweight championship against Monico Laurente this Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

The other co-featured title fight of the meet held in cooperation with Rod Nazario’s In Ths Corner, the Rizal Provincial Government under Gov. JunJun Ynares and former Gov. Casimiro Ynares is the showdown between champion Danilo Peña and Marvin Tampus for the Philippine super-flyweight belt.
