Vergel being eyed for JRU coaching post

- Joey Villar -

MANILA, Philippines - Some changes are expected to ensue in the collegiate and varsity leagues.

The Jose Rizal Bombers are reportedly close to signing up former PBA star Vergel Meneses to replace coach Ariel Vanguardia following failed attempt at making the Season 85 NCAA finals.

Paul Supan, Jose Rizal’s representative to the Management Committee, neither confirmed nor denied the report but admitted Meneses, who suited up for the Bombers in the late 80s, is one of the men in their short list.

“He’s part of the short list,” said Supan referring to the player called in the PBA as “The Areal Voyager.”

Over at the UAAP, the National U Bulldogs have dropped Manny Dandan as their coach a month ago and are looking at several possible replacements.

The names being mentioned to take over from Dandan, who steered the Bulldogs to their only post-season appearance in 2002 since the Final Four format was introduced 15 seasons back, are RP Under-16 coach Eric Altamirano, former Harbour Centre mentor Jorge Gallent, Letran coach Louie Alas and Santo Tomas mentor Pido Jarencio.

Jarencio, however, is still holding practice for the Tigers although it was not certain whether his contract will be extended by the school after leading the Tigers to the 2006 crown.

Alas, also the current coach of the Philippine Patriots in the ABL whose contract with the Knights is expiring this season, was also reportedly offered the coaching job but remains undecided.

NU athletic director Junel Baculi said they would make the official announcement soon.
