UST scores double in UniGames volley finals

ILOILO CITY , Philippines  – University of Sto Tomas (UST) scored a double win on the last day of the 14th UniGames hosted by Iloilo City and the Central Philippine University (CPU) by sweeping both the men’s and women’s divisions of the volleyball event held at the CPU gym yesterday morning.

The UST ladies beat De La Salle University-Manila in straight sets, 25-11, 25-23, and 25-18 while their men’s counterparts were extended by a set by the University of San Jose Recoletos before retaining the title they won last year in Dumaguete, 25-14, 25-12, 23-25, 25-21.

The twin triumphs brought to three the number of events won by UST in this annual competitions sponsored this year by HiSmart Multi -vitamins, CHED, Philippine Sports Commission, PCSO, Milo 3 in 1 Adult drink, Gatorade Thirst Quenchers, Mang Inasal, and David’s Salon.

UST earlier won the women’s athletics crown and its women’s team was still playing De La Salle University at presstime for the women’s football crown in Sta. Barbara turf. The West Negros University was to play College of St. Benilde in the men’s football finals at the CPU grounds.

In women’s basketball, FEU leaned on Fria Bernardo and Kat Sandel in the closing seconds of the game to pull out a come-from-behind, 79 - 77 victory over the Adamson Lady Falcons.

College of St. Benilde finished third by beating University of Manila, 74 - 68.

The men’s basketball title match between defending champion Ateneo and St. Francis of Assisi College in Las Piñas was still being played. FEU, which lost to Ateneo in the semifinals, was playing University of Iloilo for third place.
