Eagles, Tams lead UniGames with three wins

-

ILOILO, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles and the FEU Tamaraws paced the men’s basketball event of the 14th UniGames being held in Iloilo City with three straight wins each.

Recently crowned UAAP titlist Ateneo, which is also bidding for a repeat in the UniGames this year, beat Ateneo de Davao, 83-59, followed up by an 88-66 thumping of Iloilo Doctors’ College and a 122-49 rout of hapless Holy Angel College to lead its group.

The Tamaraws, hoping for a title showdown with the Eagles after they lost to UE in the 2009 UAAP semifinals, meanwhile, posted impressive victories over Silliman University, 122-49 and University of San Agustin-Iloilo, 135-66 but had a tough time against St Francis of Assisi College for a 75-69 win to match Ateneo’s elimination round record in the event that attracted 20 men’s teams and nine women’s teams in this annual meet sponsored by Hi-Smart, PCSO, PSC, CHED, Milo Adult 3 in 1, Gatorade Thirst Quenchers,Mang Inasal, and David’s Salon.

The women’s side may see a repeat of the UAAP finals as this year’s champion Adamson leads the way with three wins over the University of San Agustin, 83-31, University of Manila, 84-57, and Dela Salle-Lipa, 103-43 while defending UniGames champion FEU is a game behind with two victories against La Salle-Dasmarinas, 68-53 and St. Benilde, 60-39.

University of San Carlos also posted two wins over La Salle-Lipa, 86-71 and University of San Agustin, 73-51.

Defending overall champion last year, Rizal Technological University took both the men’s and women’s divisions in taekwondo with a total of five gold medals, three in the men’s side.
