ASAP coaches back World Record Relay

MANILA, Philippines - Swimming coaches have given their go-signal for the San Beda Alabang swimming pool as the venue for the first-ever Philippine Unity Swim, a world record marathon swim involving thousands of volunteer swimmers in a show of solidarity and unity.

Dom Clement Roque, president-rector of San Beda Alabang, earlier offered the school swimming pool as the venue of the Swim-for-Unity, which also aims to establish a new Guinness record for the longest non-stop marathon swim in an Olympic-size swimming pool.

The event was originally scheduled yesterday in celebration of United Nations Day but was postponed to a later date because of the devastation caused by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

The event is organized by the Aquatic Sports Association of the Philippines, headed by Ma. Luz Arzaga-Mendoza, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Manila-Remedios Circle under Marc Dalin and incoming president Noel Esorena.

Anybody who can cross the 50-meter pool by standard methods – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly or a combination of these – or by any unorthodox means, is invited.
