Webmasters, Lancers eye 'Sweet 16'

MANILA, Philippines - University of Visayas and University of Cebu will dispute the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball championship after sweeping the semifinals against separate opponents.

The UV Green Lancers toppled the University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars, 88-76, and 82-67.

The UC Webmasters, on the other hand, subdued the University of San Carlos Warriors, 98-91, and 87-78.

The CESAFI champion gets an automatic spot in the Philippine Collegiate Championship “Sweet 16” national finals.

The CESAFI runner-up, the Jaguars and the Warriors will have to go through the zonal competition for spot to the finals.

Zonal qualifying games will be held in Cebu, Bacolod, Naga and Metro Manila starting Nov. 4.

Defending national champion De La Salle leads 18 other teams in the hunt for remaining seven “Sweet 16” Finals seats.

The Green Archers will compete in the Naga City zonal games scheduled Nov. 8.

The other teams advancing to the zonal qualifying games are the West Negros University Mustangs (Visayas champion), Holy Trinity College Wildcats of General Santos City (Mindanao champion) and University of Nueva Caceres Greyhounds (South Luzon-Bicol champion).
