Alabang cops WGAP circuit overall crown

-

MANILA, Philippines - Alabang came away with two victories, including a 10-point romp over archrival Canlubang in Group A and a crucial win in Group C, to bag the overall championship in the 2009 WGAP (Women’s Golf Association of the Phils.) circuit at Sta. Elena recently.

Lorna Tabuena and Finina Gorres churned out a pair of 40-point outputs under the Modified Stableford system while Christine Popp and Rita Horan backed them up with 39 and 38 points, respectively, as Alabang pooled a 157 aggregate to rule the premier class.

That was 10 points better than Canlubang, which could only come up with a 147 from Marivi Laurel’s 40, Lina De Guzman’s 38, Lucy Landicho’s 35 and Vanessa Tsutsui’s 34.

The Cangolf ladies, who came into the final leg just two points behind the Alabang side with a solid campaign at home, actually wrested the overall lead with a victory in Class B where it beat Tagaytay Highlands, 153-142. But the surge proved short-lived as Alabang stamped its class in Group C, defeating Sta. Elena, 146-140, to cap its triumphant campaign in the eight-leg series it led from start to finish.

With a six-point haul in the final leg, Alabang wound up with 37 points for a three-point victory over Canlubang, which closed out with five points for 34 points.

Tagaytay Highlands, which finished second in Group B, placed third with 28 points, followed by Sta. Elena (15), Aguinaldo (10), Manila Southwoods (9), Forest Hills (8), Villamor (6), Riviera (3) and Valley (2). The other teams which competed were Manila Golf, Orchard, Phil. Navy and Wack Wack.

Ma. Cecilia Tan won the individual leg title in Class A with 41 points while Mely Leyeza of Highlands (37) and Maricel Galicim of Canlubang won in Classes B and C, respectively.
