In-form De Guzman sizzles with tournament record 65

-

CANLUBANG, Laguna, Philippines – Regina de Guzman, hobbled by injuries in recent months, showed what she can do when healthy after the former national player fired a tournament record seven-under-par 65 in the first round Tuesday of the Samsung Interscholastic golf championships at the Canlubang Golf and Country Club north course here.

The 17-year-old de Guzman, carrying the banner of Reedley International School, gunned down eight birdies against a lone bogey for the lowest-ever round in the nine-year history of the Samsung Interscholastics.

De Guzman’s Reedly squad, however, fell 14 points behind St. Paul’s Pasig in the college-high school team event of the competition featuring 112 players from 15 schools in Metro Manila.

Maan Legaspi chalked up 48 points, Ann Sabater had 43 and Marvi Monsalve tallied 37 for St. Paul’s 91 points.

La Salle, meanwhile, surged ahead in the college and grade school action while Angelicum was on top by 11 in the boys competition.

Joey Huerva scored an impressive 53 points, Marvin Mendoza made 51 and Marlo Capinianes as DLSU 1 built an early six-point cushion over Ateneo. LSGH 1, powered by AR Ramos, was far ahead of sister team LSGH 2, 128-75, in the grade school division.

The fancied Angelicum trio of Bino dela Paz (51), Jobim Carlos (50) and Aristeo Mata (44) led DLS-Zobel by 11 with their 145 total.

Wow Magic Sing, Crestlink, Cranuti, ABW, Gargol are the other sponsors of the Interscholastics. Microtel is the official hotel while Inquirer Golf, A Round of Golf and Golf Punk are media sponsors.

The individual leaders among the boys were Edsel Tan of La Salle (college), dela Paz (high school) and Luigi Guerrero of La Salle in grade school. De Guzman and Daniella Uy had the best individual scores among the girls.
