-

MANILA, Philippines - Hardcore and weekend kayakers have until Sept. 16 to register for the 4-in-1 Cavite to Corregidor kayaking event that serves as the second leg of the 2009 Philippine Kayaking series set on Sept. 19-20.

For advanced class kayakers, it will be a grueling 42K two-leg marathon as they cross from Ternate and circumnavigate Corregidor while Novice kayakers, who will be given free kayaking clinic on the first day, will have a shorter 5K race in the calmer waters off Caballo Island starting at 3 p.m. The advanced class entries set out in the morning.

The event is presented by the province of Cavite, headed by Gov. Ayong Maliksi to highlight the sports and eco-tourism attraction of the province aside from its rich historical heritage, and jointly organized by the JCI-Ternate Mardicas, Sun and Sea Sports and the Philippine Kayaking Association.

It will also feature a coastal clean-up on the second day while those who join the Corregidor-Mt. Samat package tour will be taken to the Mt. Samat Shrine and an adventure event in Camaya Coast.

Registration fee for the kayak marathon is P1150 while the novice kayakers pay P1450 as the package includes a ferry boat crossing aside from the meals, entrance fees, souvenir shirt, use of kayaks, overnight stay in Corregidor, and certificates of completion.

The Corregidor-Samat package includes the ferry crossing using Sun Cruises to Mariveles, Bataan, board and lodging, event shirts, and entry fees to the novice race for those interested.

The event is also backed by the Department of Tourism, which has included kayaking in the Philippines as a major sports tourism program.
