MANILA, Philippines - Andres Calma of Full Throttle-San Miguel scored a huge double victory recently in the sixth and penultimate leg of the 2009 Magnolia Pure Water Karting Super Series at the Boomland Track of CCP Complex in Pasay City.
It was a big comeback for Calma, son of San Miguel Beer coach Hector Calma, who figured in an accident in the Batangas race that sidelined him for four months.
He ruled both the premiere ROK Overall and ROK Junior classes of this event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by Magnolia Pure Water, San Miguel Corp., Petron, Denso, Motorstar and Aeromed.
“It’s been awhile, and it feels great to be back. This double victory is a big morale boost to my racing career,” said Calma, who’s also sponsored by Magnolia.
He didn’t join the qualifying heat but won both the Pre-Final and Final races, holding his ground against the charging Stefano Marcelo of TonyKart-San Miguel Corp.-Marcelo Racing who rallied from the tailend for the runner-up finish.
Calma clocked 14 minutes and 03.193 seconds in the 28-lap race or 2.495 seconds ahead of Marcelo who suffered a blown tire on the second lap.
Javi Benitez of Jet Racing took third place honors while Vrei-Ar Suba of PCR-Tough Gear Racing and Cebuano Patrick Gandionco wound up fourth and fifth, respectively.
Both Suba and Gandionco also snatched victories in their respective classes.
Suba clinched the ROK Novice crown, clocking 14 minutes, and 9.488 seconds over runner-up Matthew Solomon of Ready2Race and third placer Joseph Castelar of AUTS Racing.
Gandionco, on the other hand, turned back Joseph Castelar to claim the ROK Heavy crown.
But Castelar came back the Formula SL Expert class where he upstaged more experienced rivals Oliver Aquino of Alessandra Racing and frontrunning AUTS Racing teammate and Indy Villalon.
His brother John Castelar ended fourth while Milo Rivera of PCR-Tough Gear Racing took fifth place.
