MANILA, Philippines - EJ Marcelo ran away with the overall title with a career-best gross of seven-under-par 65 even as Harry Tang scored a hole-in-one in the ninth President’s Cup tournament of the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club recently.
Marcelo, the former jungolf standout, scattered seven birdies at the west course for the best score among the 470 members and guests who played in the two-day event held in honor of club president Luis Tan.
Tang won himself a Citizen Ecodrive Calendier when he aced the 14th hole. His prize could have been a lot bigger had he scored the feat on the other par-3 holes where a Jaguar XF, Land Rover Freelander, 2009 Honda City 1.5 E A/T, 2009 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.6 A/T and Mitsubishi Lancer EX were staked.
Four players earned equal rights to a GT185 Bowrider Speedboat for scoring natural eagles on the par-5 10th hole. They were Robert Go, Joseph Tambunting, Tootsie de Jesus and Edgardo Monzon.
De Jesus won two more special prizes for an eagle on the seventh hole plus hitting the longest drive of 300 yards on the 13th.
Almost P10 million worth of prizes were given away in the biggest ever staging of the tourney prepared by the sports and games committee of the club headed by Tommy Tan.
Go went on to top Group 1 to join Marcelo in the winners roster that also includes Manny Sy in Group 2, Gilbert Tan in Group 3 and Felix Go in the seniors division. Alice Jay Crisologo and Valerie Erana were the two winners in the ladies category while Junnel Roxas topped the guest division.
TCM Corporation and Philippine Fire & Marine Insurance Corp. were the other hole-in-one-sponsors. Eagle sponsors were Watercraft Venture Corporation and Yamaha Golf Car (Kart Plaza); premier sponsors were The Address at Wack Wack/Madrigal Bayot Development Corp., Sharp (Phils.) Corp., Pacific Links Golf Development, Inc., 3D New Generation, Unilever Philippines, 7107 Islands Cruise, Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa, Philippine Airlines, Outback Steakhouse, GNC-OSIM and The Plaza Premium Baked Ham.
