UM cagebelles, juniors score
MANILA, Philippines - University of Manila fashioned out a pair of emphatic victories in the women’s and juniors divisions to firm up its twin title bids in the NAASCU basketball tournament at the UM gym recently.
The Hawkettes, drawing double-digit scores from four players, trounced the St. Clare Lady Saints, 92-62, to stretch their win run to four in women’s play.
Swelly Moroña sizzled with 24 points, Wendylyn Alvarez and Jhoan Mesina tossed in 20 points apiece while Mikaela Concordia chipped in 12 points as the Hawkettes led from start to finish and won pulling away.
The 5-9 Rossana Russ also had seven points and came away with a number of blocks for the UM squad, mentored by Gene Roland Tumapat.
The Hawklets matched their counterparts streak by beating the New Era Hunters, 91-79, in junior play.
Also handled by Tumapat, the Hawklets were led by Mark Garcia, who scored 27 points.
New Era’s Leo Rancal fired 30 points but UM had too much firepower to outrun the Hunters in the third quarter en route to the victory in the 18-years-old division.
