Martinez makes big return, keys Phillies win

-

CHICAGO – Pedro Martinez made a successful return to the majors Wednesday, going five innings in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 12-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The 37-year-old, three-time Cy Young Award winner got plenty of support as Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins and Raul Ibanez homered as the World Series champs sent the Cubs to their fourth straight loss.

Martinez (1-0) allowed seven hits and three runs with a walk and five strikeouts, throwing 99 pitches. His fastest pitch was clocked at 92 mph.

Martinez’s 215th career win was his first since last Aug. 31, against Florida while with the New York Mets. He signed with the National League East leaders on July 15.

Rollins and Ibanez connected for three-run homers off reliever Sean Marshall during an eight-run fourth inning.

Jeff Samardzija (1-2) got roughed up in his first major league start after 42 relief appearances the last two seasons.

At San Francisco, Juan Uribe hit a game-ending two-run homer in the 10th inning allowing San Francisco to avoid a three-game sweep with a 4-2 win over the archrival Los Angeles.

It was a wild game in which the benches cleared and both Giants manager Bruce Bochy and bench coach — and acting manager — Ron Wotus were ejected in separate arguments.

Travis Ishikawa drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Guillermo Mota (3-4) and Randy Winn flied out before Uribe connected for his fifth homer.

Tim Lincecum pitched into the ninth and had only allowed two hits before Rafael Furcal beat out an infield single. Andre Ethier hit a tying RBI single two batters later. (AP)
