MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines scored a rare grand slam in the 26th Asean Senior Golf Championship, winning the gross championship, the net team crown and the individual gross and individual net titles in Hua-Hin, Cha-An, Thailand last week.
The team of Tony Olives, Dante Tejada, Jose Inigo and Randy Reyla pooled a 681 to edge Malaysia by one stroke in gross division while Art Ampaya, Pablo Soon, Doming Manuel and Nonet Rodriguez nipped Brunei in the countback to capture the net team plum.
Tejada copped the individual gross championship while Ampaya bagged the net title for Team RP headed by chairman-Emeritus, Frisco San Juan.
According to Lirio Escano, vice president of the Federation of Philippine Amateur Senior Golfers Inc (FPASGI), the Philippine team also fared well in other categories with Olives finishing third and Iñigo fourth in the individual gross.
In Stableford competition, Clyde Fernandez of Aguinaldo ended fourth in Group B (60-64 yrs), Benny Gopez finished third and Frank Manalo fourth in Group C (65-69 yrs). Rey Ulob of Intramuros Club also came in fourth in Group D (70-74 yrs), according to Arsenio Paredes, vice president for external affairs of FPASGI.
