Korean bucks Carlos charge, wins by one
DASMARIÑAS, Cavite , Philippines – Wang Jeung-hun held off jungolf standout Jobim Carlos with a closing six-over 78 for a one-shot victory in the championship division of the Samsung Amateur Tour at the Palmer course of the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite.
Up by six before the round, Wang nearly threw it all away after a 78 as Carlos charged back with a 73.
The 16-year-old Carlos drew level on No. 11 but reeled back with a double-bogey on the 13th.
Wang, finishing with a 36-hole total of 147, teed off on the 18th ahead by three and clinched the win despite a double-bogey. Carlos wound up at 148.
Nap Marigomen, Jeric Ang, Eva Miñoza and Irene Tatsumi foiled a Korean domination of the tourney sponsored by Samsung Electronics Philippines, Inc. as they pulled off contrasting victories in their respective divisions.
Marigomen (Class A) and Ang (Class B) triumphed in the men’s division while Miñoza (Class A) and Tatsumi (Class B) prevailed in the ladies category as local bets split the eight titles disputed with their Korean counterparts who took the lead in six of the eight divisions after Day 1.
Park Sang Woo took Class C and Kwak Tae Sop topped Class D of the men’s side for the other Korean victories.
The Samsung Tour, which moves to Camp John for the second leg on Aug. 25-26, is also sponsored by Mizuno, Crestlink, Custom Clubmakers, Wow Magic Sing, Omnisource International, Gargol, Cranutti and ABW. Marigomen (78-155) won by four over Raymond Co (81-159), Ang (83-165) beat Engracio Ang Jr. (81-168) by three, Park (87-181) defeated Suk Ho Jung (93-185) and Kwak (116-226) won over Norberto Dapito (117-230).
Miñoza rallied with a 74-151 to edge Jeong Yu Na (79-152), Tatsumi (95-192) came from behind to beat Imelda Agustin (100-94) and Jun Youn Jung (95-191) proved too good for Amy Dy (103-213).
