MANILA, Philippines - The battle for speed and supremacy reaches its climax as the country’s fastest drivers try to fortify their title bids in the fifth and penultimate leg of the 2009 San Mig Coffee National Drag Racing Championship-National Trophy Series today at the Batangas Racing Circuit.
With the last playdate washed out by heavy rains, defending champion Jonathan Tiu of JCT-Blanche Racing goes all out for a win that will assure him of an unprecedented sixth straight drag racing crown in this event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Pilipinas Shell, San Mig Coffee, Yokohama, PagCor and Aeromed.
He leads the title race with 45 points and all he needs is a runner-up finish to settle the issue.
If not, he will have to deal with a complicated situation for a three-way championship showdown with Pepi Santos of H3 Autoworks or Ed Christian Go of Blanche Racing for the Quick 8 crown and the overall plum.
“The postponement of last month’s action due to heavy rain just make me more eager, and gave me more time to adjust the car’s set-up for this crucial race,” said Tiu, who owns the BRC track record time of 9.903 seconds.
“Hopefully, no unexpected turn of events would spoil my bid to wrap up the title this early. Breaking the record would not be a priority in this race, but only when the opportunity allows,” he added.
Likewise, Ed Christian Go is also seeking his third win to fortify his chances for the Pro class crown. He has 30 points so far, enjoying a 10-point advantage over his father, San Mariano Isabela Mayor Edgar Go and Vannitec’s Why Why Dagondon.
