Tams go for 3rd in row vs Bulldogs

-

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern U seeks to stretch its streak to three as it clashes with an unpredictable National U even as University of the East and Santo Tomas take on each other for a share of second spot in the 72nd UAAP basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena.

The Tams, Warriors and Tigers are bunched at No. 2 on identical 2-1 (win-loss) slates and a win would push them closer to the Ateneo Eagles, the reigning champions who are the only remaining unbeaten team to date with a 3-0 card.

FEU, tipped by experts to go all the way this season, is the heavy favorite to win over NU, which dropped two of its first three outings, when the two collide at 2 p.m.

But if the Tams’ 63-60 decision over the Adamson Falcons Thursday would be used as a guage, FEU coach Glen Capacio said they would be in for another tough time.

“We’re executing poorly in offense, we couldn’t hit uncontested, close-range shots and our free throws,” said Capacio. “If we keep on playing like that, it would really be harder to win.”

Capacio said they would need to keep up with the Bulldogs’ torrid pace if they want to keep its streak.

“They’re quicker particularly their big men and they also have a strong zone press (defense), we have to solve these for us to beat them,” said Capacio.

The UST-UE 4 p.m. showdown is another game to see since the two teams are known for their run-and-gun style of plays.

“I’m sure they will prepare well against our attack,” said UE mentor Lawrence Chongson.

The Warriors have been leaning on the all-around play of Paul Lee, Val Acuña and the bullstrong Pari Llagas while the Tigers have been drawing firepower from Smart Gilas Pilipinas standout Dylan Ababou and the prolific Khasim Mirza.

Capacio is expected to rely on his Smart Gilas Pilipinas veterans Mark Barroca, Aldrech Ramos and JR Cawaling.

Barroca, in particular, has been playing solidly particularly in the clutch and his stellar play was in display against the Falcons, whom he torched with 15 points including a clutch jumper in the stretch that sealed the Tams’ victory.

“That’s my role in this team, to be the leader,” said Barroca.
