PORTOROZ, Slovenia – Top-ranked Dinara Safina survived a bad day for seeds to reach the Slovenia Open quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The three other seeds in second-round action – No. 4 Roberta Vinci, No. 6 Lucie Safarova and No. 7 Vera Dushevina – all lost.
Safina, playing her first tournament since losing in the Wimbledon semifinals, and making her Portoroz debut, routed fellow Russian, teenage qualifier Ksenia Pervak, 6-1, 6-2.
Pervak broke Safina once to trail 4-2 in the second, but never came close to mustering a comeback.
Safina has failed to reach the quarterfinals only twice this year. She’s played in six finals, and won two. (AP)
