MANILA, Philippines - Old School FC stayed on top of the men’s division but was joined by the Loyola Vets after three days of action in the 2009 Republic Cup Football tournament held at the Manila Polo Club.
Loyola Vets picked up three wins, beating Loyola Agila, 1-0, Superfriends, 4-2, and Titans FC, 1-0, to move to joint first with Old School.
It improved its record to five wins and one draw while Old School had two victories and a loss in its three-game schedule last Saturday.
The tournament is backed by Planet Sports (Lotto), McDonald’s, Coke, Asia Brewery, Jim Beam, Monde Nissin, Universal Robina, and Met Tathione.
Old School blanked Palitada King, 3-0, in its first game, beat Loyola Agila, 4-1, but bowed down, 2-3, to a surging Salcedo FC, which also defeated Urdaneta, 2-1, and Superfriends, 3-1, to move to solo second place with a 4-1-2 win-draw-loss record.
In third place are the Titans which split their games, winning, 5-1, over Urdaneta and losing a close game to Loyola Vets.
Loyola Agila , at 3-2-2 and Titans at 3-1-3 take the next two places while Palitada King slumped to second to last after suffering three straight losses. At the bottom of the standing is Urdaneta, still winless after seven tries.
The women’s side has the MPL All Stars way ahead with six wins against a draw after posting three successive wins last Saturday, beating the Archers-1 team, 5-1, blanking Futboleras, 3-0, and edging out UP, 2-1. Archers -1 and Archers-2 are tied for second with similar 3-1-2 records while UP recovered from its slump and posted two victories, beating the the two Archers teams with similar 2-1 scores.
