Asuncion rules GT second leg

-

MANILA, Philippines - A more aggressive John Asuncion bounced back in the final race to capture his second straight victory recently in the second leg of the 2009 Yokohama Philippine GT Championships at the Batangas Racing Circuit in Rosario, Batangas.

Driving a Honda Civic, Asuncion quickly grabbed the lead from Paul Henderson Perez at the start and controlled the tempo coast-to-coast to rule the GT 200 division of this event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by Yokohama and Pagcor.

He clocked 31 minutes, 54.312 seconds in the 16-lap final race to claim the title over Quincy Buenaflor and third placer William Tan.

Perez checked in second overall over a minute behind Asuncion to rule the GT 125 class over Nicolo Fernandez while Jerry Villanueva topped the GT 300 division.

Sharing the limelight with Asuncion was Lito Ignacio who turned back Sandy Coronel with his Toyota Celica in the 2009 Yokohama-San Mig Coffee Classic Car Championship supported by San Miguel Corporation, San Mig Coffee and Aeromed.

Asuncion actually had a tough time warding off Quincy Buenaflor earlier in the 11-lap sprint race.

Buenaflor held steady down the line as he ruled the GT 200 class with a time of 21 minutes, 34.945 seconds or a slim 0.230 of a second ahead of Asuncion.

Perez checked in third to claim the GT 125 title in the sprint race over Nicolo Fernandez while Villanueva also prevailed in the GT 300 class.
