MANILA, Philippines - Unified UPLB (University of the Philippines Los Baños) Interclub beat San Pablo Central Tennis Club, 3-1, to romp away with the men’s championship in the Escudero Cup in San Pablo City, Laguna recently.
The UPLB contingent completed its sweep of the tournament by copping the women’s division crown with Unified UPLB Team A also defeating San Pablo Team Tennis.
Other competing teams were AERA Tennis Club, University Site Tennis Club (Enverga University), San Pablo Central TC, Lucena City TC, Unified UPLB Interclub, and Tanauan (Batangas) TC.
Tournament chairman was AERA president Onie Gallega while tournament director was Owen Alcantara.
The UPLB team, composed of Kevin Yaptenco and Mitch de Padua, ruled the 35 and above category; Rodrigo Aguirre and Bong Ballesfin captured the 45 and above title while Justin Buendia and Jim Rellona reigned in the Open division. Other members of the team were Max Quimbo and Rudy Gonzales.
The San Pablo City tandem of Totoy Alina and Noel Majarucum took the 55 and above plum. Other San Pablo players were Renz de Villa, Romel Fortadez, Jeff Alcalde, Ruel Ramos, Taggy Reyes, and Resty Capina.
The UPLB women’s team was composed of April Mayo (captain), Alma Cedillo, Imelda Revilla, Emily Visco, Angie Go, Girlie Acorda, Arlene Alfonso and Vivian Camacho.
Skipper Jean Watanabe headed the San Pablo women’s team that included Thelma Gesmundo, Myla Alcantara, Jaja Gatdula, Noemi Exconde, Ella Barieta, and Ninet Emlano.
