MANILA, Philippines – German ace Ralf Souquet of Germany overwhelmed Jasmin Ouschan, 9-1, even as former SEA Games gold medalist Victor Arpilleda stunned fancied Corey Deuel of the US, 9-7, to advance to the round of 32 in the Philippine Open Ten Ball Championship at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall 2 yesterday.
Souquet, a double world champion, made short work of the pretty Austrian Ouschan as he used his experience to pocket eight straight racks to move into the next round.
Arpilleda delivered the biggest win in the opening day as he outlasted Deuel to lead two other Filipinos in the next stage.
Mario Tolentino and Demosthenes Pulpul also gained in the tournament with the former bucking a slow start to beat Ernesto Dominguez, 9-6, and the latter, a semifinalist in the World Ten Ball Championship last year, beating Elvis Calasang, 9-3.
Souquet didn’t let up from start to finish. He raced to an early 8-0 lead and was poised to sweep the match until the Austrian lass found a slim opportunity in the ninth rack where she grabbed her first point – and her last.
