Wushu meet on at Rizal Memorial
MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. will be the guest of honor and speaker at the opening ceremony of the two-day National Wushu Championship at the National Wushu Center, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex today.
Other invited guests are PSC chairman Harry Angping, the PSC commissioners, POC executive board members and other sports leaders.
The championship, where some 150 regional bets will be displaying their wares, is the first Wushu Federation Philippines tournament to be staged under newly installed president Tan She Ling.
“We hope to discover in this championship new talents we can mold into world champions. That’s why we have age-group competitions,” Tan said.
Since the inception of WFP in 1987, wushu athletes have won 10 gold medals in world championships and have always been at the forefront of the Team Philippines’ campaign in Asian and Southeast Asian Games.
Action will be in both taolu (routine exercise) and sanshou (combat).
Members of the national team and national pool will be relegated to the sidelines as they are not eligible to compete.
