MANILA, Philippines - Third seed Carmella Ysabel Galve lived up to expectations as she downed Valjoe Necesario in the fifth and final round and ruled the juniors division in the final evaluation of the third summer offering of Milo-sponsored Checkmate chess clinic held over the weekend at St. Francis Square in Mandaluyong.
Galve of Las Piñas scored a perfect score of five points after five rounds of play and bagged the junior title. In second place with 3.5 points was 13-year old Paul Adrian Manila while Claudio Olar Jr. and Vanjoe Necesario shared the third-fourth slots with 3.0 points apiece.
In the 12-under division, Raphael Babar took the top spot also with a perfect score of five points followed by Judy Ann Necesario with 4.0 points for the second place and Tim dela Cruz who came in third with 3.0 points.
Other age-group winners were William Bermejo; Mark Aquit and Heinrich Torres (10-under); Gabriel Jalandoni and Al Canafe (9-under) while Justine Mondez and Philip Bermejo won the seven-under section.
On the other hand, in the tournament by courses, the winners were Jan Patrick Pangilinan, Canafe, Anne Sio and Ronel Mendoza (Preparatory); dela Cruz, Judino Macayan and Vanjoe Necesario (junior beginners) and Olar (senior beginners).
The event, part of the Milo-sponsored Checkmate development program, aims to determine the students’ performance after having given them a series of chess lessons. It also culminated the clinic’s third summer offering conducted in various places in Metro Manila.
