World jungolf elims resume at Sherwood
MANILA, Philippines - Local jungolfers resume their quest for slots to the Callaway Junior World championships in the second half of the 108-hole qualifying tournament starting today at the Sherwood Hills Golf Club course in Trece Martires, Cavite.
With the tourney under the threat of more rains just like last week in the Manila Southwoods leg which was shortened to 36 holes, the competing field will be hard-pressed to play well in each round to keep themselves in contention for the 36 slots being disputed in six different age-groups for boys and girls.
Jobim Carlos has a five-stroke lead over Eric Gallardo while Regina de Guzman, with two straight wins in the season, leads Maan Legaspi by seven shots in the Class A going to this week’s culmination of the qualifier.
Also trying to keep their lead in the boys division are LJ Go, Miggy Yee, Lanz Uy, Philippe Palanca and Josh Jorge. The other leaders in the girls’ side are Irina Gabasa, Daniella Uy, Pauline del Rosario, Nicole Abelar and Annika Tanoue.
Philippine Airlines, presenter of the summer circuits, is awarding the 12 champions of the tourney with free tickets to Los Angeles for their campaign in the Callaway Junior World this coming July.
The Jungolf summer circuit is sponsored by Diamond Motor Corp., Unilever, Ottica Corp., Fury, Aces Agri Manufacturing, Club Marinduque, Goin Straight, Powerade/Coca Cola, Callaway/Electrobus Consolidated and Golf Depot.
After today’s first round, the tourney takes a break on Tuesday and resumes Wednesday for the second round. The final round will be on Thursday.
