Carcel shackles rivals, claims Formula SL Novice plum
MANILA, Philippines - Cebuano Tonyo Carcel stepped up his game as he upstaged more experienced rivals to capture the title in the Formula SL Novice class recently in the second leg of the 2009 Magnolia Super Karting Series at the Batangas Racing Circuit.
Carcel, 12, held steady against Indy Villalon and Joseph Castelar in the early goings and hung tough down the line to check in behind Bobby Domingo in the combined race of this event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored Magnolia, San Miguel Corp., Palmer Asia Inc. – The Fire and Security Expert–Motorstar and Aeromed.
He clocked 13 minutes, 41.930 seconds in the 10-lap race, 0.254 of a second behind FSL Expert champion Bobby Domingo. He even finished ahead of three other tough AUTS Racing drivers – Castelar, Villalon and Joel Caniza.
Fellow Cebuano Jette Calderon also did a good job finishing fifth overall in the combined event to clinch the runner-up honors in the Formula SL Novice division.
Newcomer Archim Lorenz Lagman of PCR-Tough Gear-Fern C took third place as he likewise bagged the championship trophy in the MBA class over Gab Dacasin and Jerico Tolin.
Ready2Race Korean guest driver Daniel Park and Coleen Yap wound up fourth and fifth in the Formula SL Novice.
Sharing the limelight with Carcel were Fil-British Carl Pollington of PCR-Tough Gear-Fern C and Christian Gaddi of Jet Racing.
Pollington pulled another dominating feat over Ready2Race rivals Aira Medrano and third placer Joseph Tumambing to claim his second straight triumph in the Baby ROK class.
Gaddi also romped to his second consecutive triumph in the Mini ROK division over Cebu lady karter Kali Carcel and Japanese Marino Sato.
