Agojo shines as Pepperdine dominates West Coast Conference tilt
MANILA, Philippines - Pepperdine senior Jayvie Agojo captured her second West Coast Conference crown in near-record fashion while steering the Pepperdine women’s golf team to its eighth straight league title in Vallejo, California Tuesday.
Agojo, who also won the 2006 individual title as a freshman, ran away with low medalist honors with a 54-hole aggregate of 221, closing out with a three-over par 75 at the wind-raked Hiddenbrooke Golf Course.
The 22-year-old shotmaker, a three-time PSA (Philippine Sportswriters Association) awardee back home, opened up with 72 and 74 and posted a seven-stroke romp over teammate Kaitlin Drolson, which tied the biggest margin of victory in tournament history.
After starting the final round just two shots ahead of San Francisco, the Waves pooled a second straight 304, that included a pair of 77s from Taylore Karle and Jessica Wallace as the team finished with a 905 (297-304-304) total.
That gave the Waves a whopping 18-shot victory over the San Francisco Dons, who faded with a 320 for a 923.
“Jayvie was really proud of her result. She came down the stretch and made some great pars,” said Pepperdine coach Laurie Gibbs of the Filipino ace, who will graduate next month with a degree in International Studies, major in Asian History.
