MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas completed its domination of the 71st University Athletic Association of the Philippines as it annexed the juniors crown for a double victory.
The Tiger Cubs topped table tennis and girls’ swimming and volleyball and finished second in taekwondo and boys’ swimming to amass 99 points for the overall championship.
It was the España-based school’s third straight general championships and 11th overall since the league started instituting the high school competition 14 years ago.
The Ateneo Eaglets (2001-2002) and the University of the East Pages (2006) won the only titles that eluded the Tiger Cubs.
UE garnered 92 points following triumphs in taekwondo and boys’ volleyball to finish second while Ateneo, a two-time winner, came in third with 87 points on wins in basketball, centerpiece track and field and boys’ volleyball.
Completing the standings are La Salle-Zobel (60), University of the Philippine (57), Adamson (39), Far Eastern U (28) and National U (16).
The UST seniors squad recently romped away with the overall championship in the collegiate ranks with a runaway score of 333 points, winning nine of the 28 events. – J. Villar
