MANILA, Philippines - Unrated Rey Flores of Quezon City forced second seed Lord Guerra into a draw in the fifth and final round to capture the MCC 1850 below standard chess crown via tiebreak at the St. Francis Square in Mandaluyong City recently.
Flores wound up with 4.5 points with four wins and one draw then nipped last month’s champion Steven Dacanay of Adamson in the tiebreak to clinch the title. Dacanay beat Jerome Villanueva in the final round.
With four points apiece were Guerra, Robert Haryanto and Randy Culangan.
