Marikina ends senior citizens sports festival

MANILA, Philippines - Kalumpang captured the International Challenge Cup, Jesus dela Peña bagged the Mayor MCF Cup and Jesus dela Peña and Malanday topped the Congressman’s 1 & 2 Classic in ground golf competition in the recently held Marikina Senior Citizens Sports Festival at the Marikina Sports Park.

It was an exciting, fun-filled competition with four teams in Jesus dela Peña, Kalumpang, Malanday and Parang doing well in Vice Mayor’s Championship.

The Pag-ibig Fund Team topped the soft volleyball event with special awards going to Kalipi Team, City Day Care Group, Barangay Parang and Nanka.

All 16 barangays in the city participated in the competition sponsored by Yoshinoya, Chrisports and Plasmin with Pag-ibig Fund as main benefactor.

Japanese team leader and Chiba City Social, Cultural and Sports head Masayoshi Kaneko was impressed by the local ground golfers considering that the sport was introduced in the country only three years ago.

Thinking that Filipinos are now at par with some of the best players in Japan, Kaneko said he would work to get a slot for a Philippine team to the Chiba Ground Golf Classic slated in October.

Marikina Mayor Marides Fernando said they’re laying the groundwork for a Metro Manila tournament and even a national championship as part of their “Better Future Through Sports” Program.
