Manila-Boracay regatta off today

MANILA, Philippines - The Standard Insurance-Lexus-Smart Infinity Manila-to-Boracay Regatta sails off today at the waters of the Manila Yacht Club.

Signaling the week-long sailing festivities including the 17th President’s Cup Regatta, this is one of the legs of Asian Yachting Grand Prix 2008-09.

The much-anticipated sailing races are also sponsored by San Miguel, Watercraft Ventures, Tanduay Rhum, Seair, Zegna, Guerlain, Luxasia, Neil Pryde, Pepsi, Gatorade, Summit Mineral Water and Media partners Manila Bulletin, Asia-Pacific Boating, Asian Yachting News, Fragrant Harbour, Lifestyle Asia, and Calibre Billionaire.

More than 30 entries from the Philippines, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Austria will compete for both local and regional titles.

Manila to Boracay defending champion and 1997 President’s Cup Regatta champion Jelik, skippered by Frank Pong of Hongkong, will once again try to outmaneuver 16th President’s Cup defending champion Subic Centennial, skippered by Judes Echauz.

Other boats sailing to Boracay to earn merits for the Asian Yachting Grand Prix, are points leader Hi Fi with New Zealander Neil Pryde at the wheel, Freefire 52, with Russ Parker and Canadian Bill Bremner with Foxy Lady IV.

Local favorites are Karakoa, skippered by Ray Ordoveza, Jo de Ros with George Hackett, and Selma Star , skippered by Jun Avecilla.

Organized by the Manila Yacht Club, the event has made the Philippines one of the much enjoyed sailing destinations in the region. Running on its seventh year the Manila-to-Boracay race has increased its grid significantly every year.

This is the second time both races will be held in tandem, drawing foreign boats into the country’s pristine waters.
