Mikee Romero is expanding his wings in the sports community and is now throwing his hat into one of the sports he loves most – cycling.
The Harbour Centre owner who is also the chairman of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) is joining the PhilCycling elections on January 16, 2009, at the Amoranto Multi-Purpose Hall in Quezon City.
Romero, a former De La Salle Green Archer who is also involved is volleyball, baseball and martial arts, will represent the Harbour Centre Cycling Club for the polls where 15 members of the PhilCycling board will be elected.
So far, 27 cycling club presidents have indicated their intention to run.
“I’m an avid fan of cycling since the golden days of the Tour of Luzon, so I just hope I will be given the chance to help cycling, especially the amateur ones,” said Romero, whose Harbour Centre bankrolls the national basketball team.
Pat McQuaid, president of the Union Cycliste Internationale, the world governing body for cycling, has been invited to observe the PhilCycling elections which are conducted once every Olympic cycle.
Close to a hundred clubs from all over the country are registered for the elections. The clubs, however, will still be scrutinized by a PhilCycling elections committee.
The PhilCycling is strictly observing election procedures as prescribed by the Philippine Olympic Committee under its president, Jose Cojuangco Jr.
National sports associations like the PhilCycling, which is registered officially as the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines with the Securities and Exchange Commission, should submit the official list of qualified voters as well as the roster of candidates and their constitution and by-laws to the POC before holding their elections. A POC official representative will observe the NSA elections.
