Tigresses snatch WBL college crown

-

Most Valuable Player Juvelyn Andaya scored 17 points but got tremendous help from Mary Joy Galicia and Regine Divina to lift University of Santo Tomas past St. Scholastica’s College, 85-74, to win the collegiate crown in the Milo-sponsored Women’s Basketball League over the weekend at the Xavier School gym.

With all defenders pouncing on Andaya, Galicia went on to topscore with 22 points, while Divina had 21 before Rubelyn Mendoza later joined the party with 13 points as the Tigresses claimed yet another title to continue their dominance of the event organized by the Basketball Efficiency and Scientific Training (BEST) Center.

In High School Competitive Division, Miriam College leaned on MVP Jennifer Dimaano to subdue La Salle-Antipolo, 64-60, to win the crown. Dimaano led her team with 12 points but got support from Danica Therese Jose, who had 11 points.

San beda Alabang was given the sportsmanship award in the class.

Montessori Integrated School, meanwhile, banked on a balanced scoring to edge New Era, 38-37, for the High School Developmental crown.

Miriam College defeated Assumption, 42-41, for the Elementary Division title.

Saddled with four fouls, Mariella Lamar, was fielded in the third quarter and somehow stayed out of triuble, to Miriam to the win.

Miriam was ahead by 11 points going into the fourth quarter; but Assumption, led by Martina Lumba who made all of her 8 points in the fourth quarter, led a rally together with Katrina Nemo, Alessandra Eala and Carmina Tioseco with four points each. Miriam was leading by one point in the dying seconds, but Assumption missed a shot from underneath with two seconds left.
