Burger King stops Pharex
Nestor David and Abby Santos came through with clutch baskets in the fourth quarter and Burger King topped Pharex, 73-67, to stay in the running for the 2009 PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup quarterfinal round at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym in Manila yesterday.
David and Santos had significant contributions in a decisive fourth-quarter attack leading to the BK Stunners’ third win against five losses.
The 6-foot-5 Santos scored seven of his game-high 19 points in the final period while the 6-foot-2 David produced 16 points and 10 rebounds.
“It’s nice to be back. It’s nice to win again,” said BK coach Allan Gregorio.
The Generix, who stunned the league-leading Harbour Centre Batang Pier, 78-74, on Thursday, fell to 1-7, their quarterfinal bid now in peril.
Pharex tried to mount a comeback late in the game but the Stunners were not to be denied.
The Generix were actually more aggressive but poor shooting did them in.
They converted only 23 of 70 tries for 33 percent shooting as against the Stunners’ 44-percent clip.
In the second game, Bacchus, drawing tremendous numbers from Paul Lee, beat Hapee Toothpaste, 106-103, in overtime for its first back-to-back wins in the tournament.
Lee produced 27 points, 11 rebounds and four assists as the Energy Warriors improved their record to 4-5. The Complete Protectors dropped to 4-4.
